What will happen to the smartphone in 2024? We can only speculate about the details at the moment, but major developments seem almost certain. What are the major manufacturers focusing on in their latest models to win over as many customers as possible?
Artificial intelligence
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research describes artificial intelligence (AI) as “one of the most important key technologies”. And AI is also likely to play a key role in smartphones. AI is already being used in many different ways on cell phones. For example, it helps to edit photos, translate languages, or improve the quality of calls.
It will be particularly exciting to see what Apple, Google, Samsung, Motorola and other competitors come up with for their latest models in the field of AI. Google, in particular, has recently been very active in terms of AI functions. According to media reports, a new AI assistant is even planned for the anticipated Pixel 9 series.
Samsung is also increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence and will be showing what the company has come up with in just a few days. The South Koreans will be presenting their latest flagships in the Galaxy S series at a “Galaxy Unpacked” event on January 17 and announcing “a new era” of mobile AI. Apple is also not likely to let its guard down with the iPhone 16 series expected for 2024.
Cameras, displays, and processors
There are also likely to be numerous innovations in the cameras installed in smartphones. The various manufacturers have been engaged in an arms race here for years. What exactly will happen in terms of sensors, software, and the like remains to be seen, but in 2024, AI will probably also play a major role in this area.
In addition, manufacturers will probably once again want to outdo each other in terms of chips installed. Faster, more powerful, and more economical where possible is likely to be the motto for processors, just as it has been in recent years. A new smartphone is difficult to sell if it is not faster and better than its predecessor on paper.
It also remains to be seen whether there will be any surprises when it comes to displays. The high-resolution screens will probably come with high refresh rates. Meanwhile, foldable cell phones could become even more widespread. Some are already anticipating a follow-up to Google’s foldable debut, the Pixel Fold, which was released in 2023.
In terms of housing, things are likely to remain colorful. For a while now, smartphone manufacturers have been increasingly focusing on offering devices in as many different casing colors as possible. For example, several Motorola models are also available in “Peach Fuzz”, the Pantone color of the year 2024.
